Match Report - 24 Sep 2011, Old Salopian Football Club 2nd XI beat The School
The game started with Mr Clarke’s first blast on the whistle which luckily was one of only a few in this pleasant and well natured affair. The Old Salopians got off to a better start than their younger contemporaries, with Will Speer and Fred Young keeping the ball well and driving forward. A solid backline was the basis of a good performance with Mike Williams and Nick Edwards not letting any high balls through, and George Cornwall-Leigh nullifying their tricky left winger, George Heler proving valuable support on the left.
It wasn’t until about 15 minutes in, that the School team had a meaningful shot with a 25 yard volley that was shovelled round the post by the makeshift goalkeeper, stand in captain Chris Iggulden. A corner up the other end proved to be the opening that the Old Boys were looking for. George Bakemore heading in Will Speer’s corner, expertly. Corners were the undoing of the school boys with Nicko Field driving in with his left boot from the edge of the area follow a half clearance to make it 2-0. The goal was a fine reward for Nicko’s performance, as he was a constant threat down the right.
The second half provided a much more open game with both sides having plenty of chances but the finishing from both teams was not at its best. Half way through the second half, the younger generation of scored from a corner themselves, despite being quite a diminutive side. This lead to a nervy finale to the game and although there were plenty of chances to seal the victory the Old Boys held on with Tom Shaw making one fine save. Ben Jones came off with 20 minutes to go with very bad blisters after a solid shift, and Chris ‘Torres’ Hopkinson will want to forget this one and move on.
