Match Report - 18 Feb 2012, Old Salopian Football Club 2nd XI beat Old Brentwoods
Depsite the lost of Captain and inspiration Tim Colman and many other first team regulars such as goalkeeper Nige Corlett, both full backs, Lewis Brown and James Dobbs and midfielders Fred Young and Nicko Field, they came away from Essex with a positive result, winning 4-3. The 2s had to travel to Brentwood but where they were up for the game and Will Speer and Sam Robertson simply out fought the Essex lads in midfield, both were carrying injuries to make their performances even more impressive. Guy Faith was seeing a lot of the ball in the first half and his darting runs and constant pressure was too much for the poor left back and on a number of occasions he nearly scored or assist one of his teammates. The Old Salopian pressure told as Zang Griener made it 5 goals in as many games before half time but the lead was short lived as a wonder goal from outside the area left the reliable Tom Shaw hapless. The score was 1-1 at half time, both centre mids had to come off so on came OJ Heywood and Harry Fildes for the forementioned injured players. Harry Fildes was the game changer and his drive and will to win saw him score a true goal of his own making. Guy Faith first scored from a corner, smashing the loose ball home with his left foot and not long after Harry Fildes received the ball in the area from Chris Iggulden and after some fancy footwork to beat a couple of men, bulldozed his way through another and then saw his shot fly in the other corner. He then went on to win the decisive penalty which Will Speer shot down the middle, who had been let back on due to an injury to the always committed and hard working George Cornwall-Leigh which was unfortunate as he was defending well and making good runs forward. With the score at 4-1 Brentwood did manage to give the Old Salopians a little scare with two goals out of nothing and their third goal was another that the poor Tom Shaw could do nothing about. The solid and aggressive Nick Edwards fought hard to see of the challenge of their big striker, Ben Alderson was good at left full back again, with some timely tackles and always providing support to the midfield, Oli Harrison was coolness and calmness personified as ever at centre back and their defending was matched on the front line by striker and workhorse Angus Barthram.
